Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB eSIM Guide

Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB eSIM: compatibility and setup guide
The Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB supports eSIM in most sales markets, including versions sold in the United States and many other countries. The important exception is the mainland China version: Apple identifies model A3527 as the China mainland variant, and its regional guidance says that this model is not among the iPhone 17 models that support eSIM there. Storage capacity does not determine eSIM support; the sales region and hardware model do.
For an eSIM-capable version, you can install a digital mobile plan for travel and use it for mobile data without removing your main line. Before choosing a plan, confirm your exact model number, check that the phone is not carrier-locked, and make sure the provider supports eSIM activation for your destination. The steps below explain how to do that and what to check if setup does not work.
Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB at a glance
| Item | What to know |
|---|---|
| Device | Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB |
| Capacity | 256GB; capacity does not change the eSIM hardware |
| eSIM support | Yes for eSIM-capable regional versions; the mainland China A3527 version is the exception for this generation |
| SIM configuration | Depending on market: eSIM only; eSIM plus a physical nano-SIM; or mainland China A3527 with two physical nano-SIMs and no eSIM support for this generation |
| Active lines | Apple lists dual eSIM support: two eSIMs can be active at once on supported versions |
| Stored profiles | Apple says eight or more eSIM profiles can be stored; only the supported number can be active together |
| Requirements | An eSIM-capable model, a carrier-unlocked phone when using another provider, and a plan from an eSIM-supporting provider |
| Best for travel | Keeping a primary line available while selecting a separate eSIM line for mobile data |
Apple's specifications for the iPhone 17 Pro Max state that it uses eSIM technology and is not compatible with a physical SIM card in eSIM-only markets. In markets where the device has a SIM tray, the physical nano-SIM can coexist with eSIM, subject to the particular regional model and the mobile provider's support. The 256GB label only identifies storage. It does not mean that every phone with that name has identical SIM hardware.
Regional versions: check the market, not just the name
The retail name Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB covers devices sold for multiple markets. Apple lists several model numbers for the iPhone 17 Pro Max: A3257 for the United States and Puerto Rico; A3525 for Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the U.S. Virgin Islands; A3527 for mainland China; and A3526 for other countries and regions. Apple's identification page also describes which markets have no SIM tray and which have a physical nano-SIM tray.
This matters in two ways. First, a model with no SIM tray is designed around eSIM, so it cannot use a physical SIM as a fallback. Second, a model with a tray may still support eSIM, but that cannot be inferred from the tray alone. For example, the mainland China A3527 variant is region-specific. Apple's current eSIM guidance lists only certain newer iPhone models as supporting eSIM in mainland China and does not include iPhone 17 Pro Max. A mainland China device should therefore not be treated as eSIM-compatible based only on the global iPhone 17 Pro Max specifications.
Hong Kong and Macao have their own combinations of SIM support. Apple's support information specifically directs owners of an iPhone 17 Pro Max purchased in Hong Kong or Macao to its eSIM dual-SIM guidance. Do not confuse this with the mainland China market: the places are distinct markets, and Apple's rules for one do not establish support in the other. If you bought the phone second-hand, imported it, or do not know where it was originally sold, check the model number in Settings and ask the seller or Apple Support to confirm its market variant before paying for a plan.
| What you see | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No SIM tray on the phone | The device is an eSIM-only regional version | Confirm an EID and the Add eSIM option in Settings |
| Nano-SIM tray and an EID | The regional version may support both SIM types | Check Add eSIM and confirm provider and carrier-lock status |
| Nano-SIM tray but no EID or Add eSIM | It may be a version without eSIM capability, or the phone may need further checks | Verify the model number and original market with Apple |
| Model number A3527 | Mainland China version | Do not assume that it can install a travel eSIM; confirm with Apple for the exact device and location |
| Carrier lock says “No SIM restrictions” | The iPhone is unlocked for another provider's SIM service | You still need a compatible model and an eligible eSIM plan |

How to check your exact iPhone
Check the phone itself before purchasing a travel plan. A product listing, box name, or seller's description may omit the regional model details.
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap General, then About.
- Find Model Number. The value shown first is usually a part number; tap it to reveal the model number beginning with “A”. Note the full number.
- On the same screen, look for EID. An EID is the identifier associated with the embedded SIM hardware. If it appears, that is a useful indication that the phone has eSIM hardware, but still verify regional support and carrier restrictions.
- Open Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. For use with a different provider, it should say No SIM restrictions. If it names a restriction or does not clearly show that status, ask the original carrier to unlock the phone.
- Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions or language settings). Look for Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular. The exact wording can vary with iOS version and region.
- Compare the model number with Apple's current iPhone identification information and ask the plan provider whether that model can activate its eSIM in the country where you will install it.
For a quick self-check or a different device, check your device compatibility. If EID and Add eSIM are both missing after iOS is up to date, do not assume the phone is compatible; confirm the exact model with Apple or the seller.
What dual eSIM means in practice
On supported versions, iPhone 17 Pro Max can store multiple eSIM profiles and keep two eSIMs active simultaneously. Stored and active profiles are different: only the supported number can be active together. Apple specifies storage for eight or more profiles on supported models.
Two active lines do not provide two simultaneous data connections. Choose one line for cellular data in Settings. You can keep your primary line available and use a travel eSIM for data, but check your home carrier's roaming rules. A travel data eSIM usually does not include a regular phone number, voice service, or SMS unless the plan explicitly says otherwise; messaging and calling apps can use mobile data.
Before you install an eSIM
- [ ] Confirm the A-number and regional eSIM support.
- [ ] Check EID or Add eSIM in Settings.
- [ ] Make sure the phone is unlocked if using another provider.
- [ ] Confirm the plan covers each destination and that data, validity, price, and activation timing suit the trip.
- [ ] Have Wi-Fi and the QR code or provider activation details ready.
- [ ] Review roaming terms for your primary line.
If compatibility is confirmed, browse travel eSIM plans and compare destination coverage, data, validity, price, and activation conditions. Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website where you can choose, arrange, and activate an eSIM with a suitable mobile-data plan for an international trip. The mobile service depends on the plan and the local networks it uses.
Install and activate eSIM on Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB
The available setup method depends on the provider. Connect to Wi-Fi, follow the instructions supplied with the plan, and do not repeatedly scan a QR code that may be single-use.
Option 1: install from a QR code
- Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service) and tap Add eSIM.
- Choose Use QR Code and scan the provider's code. If asked, enter its confirmation code.
- Wait for the profile to download and activate. Give it a clear label, such as “Travel data.”
- Choose whether to keep your primary line on. Select the travel eSIM under Cellular Data when you want to use its plan.
- At your destination, turn on the travel line and enable its data roaming only if the provider instructs you to.
Some providers offer an activation link, app-based setup, or manual entry instead. Use only the method and details provided for your plan. An eSIM transfer from another phone works only when supported by both the carrier and devices; a travel profile may not be transferable after installation.
After setup, confirm the line appears and is enabled in Settings > Cellular. Select it for data and follow the provider's roaming guidance. Menu labels may vary by iOS version.
See the iOS eSIM installation guide or Android eSIM installation guide for another device.
Use the eSIM for mobile data while travelling
Install over Wi-Fi before departure if the plan permits, and check when validity begins: it may start at installation or first connection in the destination. Save activation details offline and confirm that all countries on your route are covered.
At arrival, turn on the travel line, select it under Cellular Data, and wait for registration. Enable its data roaming only if instructed. Check home-line roaming costs separately. Maps, messaging, and browsing usually use less data than video calls, hotspot use, or photo uploads, so compare your expected use with the plan's data and validity. Regional coverage, hotspot access, and fair-use limits depend on the plan terms.
A data eSIM supports apps such as maps, email, and internet calling, but does not automatically include a phone number, voice service, or SMS. iPhone uses one selected cellular data line at a time; review that selection after switching profiles.
Troubleshooting: eSIM missing or no connection
There is no Add eSIM option. Check the A-number, original sales market, and EID under Settings > General > About. Update iOS over Wi-Fi and restart. Do not assume the mainland China A3527 supports eSIM; ask Apple to confirm an uncertain configuration.
The QR code is rejected. Check that it belongs to this plan and has not expired or already been used. Try the provider's alternative setup method if available. For an invalid or used code, contact the provider rather than scanning repeatedly.
The profile installs, but there is no service. Turn on the line, check destination coverage and plan validity, and select it for cellular data. Follow the provider's roaming instructions. Toggle Airplane Mode off and on, wait briefly, then restart if needed. Contact support with your country and error if it still does not register.
The phone will not add the plan. Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. The original carrier handles unlocking. Confirm regional compatibility and provider eligibility. Avoid deleting a profile as an early fix because a single-use code may not reinstall.
Mobile data is on, but apps are offline. Confirm Cellular Data and the travel line are selected, check remaining data and expiry, and enable roaming only if instructed. Briefly test with Wi-Fi off, then restore it. If only one app fails, check its own permissions or network settings.
Roaming charges appear or service stops at a border. Check which line is selected for data and the home carrier's roaming terms. Confirm that the new country is included in the travel plan; follow provider guidance for network selection if needed.
Frequently asked questions
Does Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB support eSIM?
Yes, on eSIM-capable regional versions. If you plan to use another provider, the phone must also be unlocked. Apple's current guidance does not list mainland China A3527 for eSIM support; verify the A-number first.
Does 256GB affect eSIM compatibility?
No. Capacity is storage; SIM capability depends on regional hardware, carrier restrictions, software, and provider support.
Can I keep my usual number while using a travel eSIM?
Often, yes, where the SIM arrangement supports it. Select the travel eSIM for data and check your home carrier's roaming rules. Only one line provides cellular data at a time.
Can I install before travel, and are calls included?
Usually you can install over Wi-Fi, but validity may start at installation or first connection. Check plan terms. Data-focused eSIMs do not necessarily include a number, voice calls, or SMS.
What if EID appears but Add eSIM does not?
Confirm regional support, iOS, carrier lock, and provider eligibility. Give Apple or the provider the A-number and error; EID alone does not guarantee that every plan can be activated.
Final check before your trip
For Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB, confirm the A-number, regional eSIM support, EID or Add eSIM, and No SIM restrictions under Carrier Lock if using another provider. Check destination coverage, data, validity, price, and activation timing.
