China Mobile eSIM in China: What to Check

China Mobile eSIM in China: what travelers should check
China Mobile is one of the mainland Chinese mobile network operators. It now supports eSIM for eligible smartphones as well as other connected devices, but the service is tied to the Chinese domestic market and has specific device, identity-check and in-person activation requirements. A phone that supports travel eSIM in another country is not automatically eligible for a China Mobile eSIM, and an eSIM issued by a travel service is not the same product as a domestic China Mobile number.
For a traveler, the first question is not simply “Does my phone have eSIM?” It is “Which regional version of my phone do I have, where will I install the profile, and what kind of service do I need?” These details matter in China. A visitor who needs a domestic mobile number and local operator service should confirm eligibility directly with China Mobile before visiting a service hall. Someone who mainly needs mobile data while traveling may prefer to arrange a travel eSIM before arrival, provided the device and the destination rules allow it.
This guide refers to mainland China and the mainland China market. China Mobile Hong Kong is a separate regional service, with its own rules and offers; this article does not describe it. Service availability, supported devices and enrolment procedures can change, so use the operator’s current service information for the final decision. The facts below were checked on November 2, 2026, against China Mobile’s published service information and current device guidance.
China Mobile’s place in the local market
China Mobile is a nationwide mobile network operator in mainland China. It provides domestic mobile communications; an eSIM stores a subscriber profile digitally but does not make a domestic subscription an international travel data product.
Its eSIM services span different device types. Smartphone eSIM and companion-device eSIM are distinct: the operator’s “One Number, Two Devices” agreement describes an eSIM watch or other specified companion device linked to a main China Mobile number, with product-specific limits. A linked watch profile is not a standalone phone service.
China Mobile operates 4G and 5G services. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s “2025 Communications Industry Statistical Bulletin” and China Mobile’s 2025 annual results describe national infrastructure and the operator’s network development, respectively; both were checked on November 2, 2026. Neither national statistics nor a company-wide figure guarantees service at a particular address. Reception depends on location, device bands, indoor conditions, demand and maintenance. Check the places on your itinerary.
This article covers mainland China. China Mobile Hong Kong is a separate regional service. Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan also have separate mobile-service arrangements, so check roaming and destination support individually rather than assuming a mainland profile will work across them.
Does China Mobile support eSIM?
Yes. China Mobile supports eSIM for eligible devices and users in mainland China. Apple’s “Using eSIM with iPhone in mainland China” support page (published September 9, 2026; checked November 2, 2026) names China Mobile among supported carriers and says activation takes place at a physical operator service hall with an identity check. Samsung’s mainland China eSIM guide (updated July 29, 2026; checked November 2, 2026) likewise identifies China Mobile as an eSIM operator and advises confirming the designated service location. China Mobile’s “One Number, Two Devices” agreement (updated September 3, 2026; checked November 2, 2026) sets out separate companion-device eSIM terms.
This does not establish that every visitor can enrol. Requirements can depend on account, identity document, device, province and service type. China Mobile’s companion-service agreement has its own verification and device rules; do not apply those terms automatically to smartphone eSIM. Public information reviewed for this guide did not confirm a general tourist eSIM or prepaid smartphone offer. If you need a domestic number, ask China Mobile whether your passport or other document is accepted, whether you qualify, and whether your exact device can be enrolled.
Device variants: verify the exact model
A phone’s commercial name is not enough to establish eSIM compatibility. Hardware, SIM arrangements and software support can differ by market. A model that supports travel eSIM elsewhere may not accept a mainland operator profile, while an eligible mainland version may have different regional capabilities.
Apple’s current mainland guidance names specific iPhone models and says other iPhones, including those bought outside mainland China, cannot install mainland carrier profiles. Samsung’s regional guide similarly limits mainland profiles to selected Galaxy models purchased in mainland China. These lists are model- and date-specific, not a universal compatibility rule. Check the manufacturer’s latest guidance and have China Mobile confirm the full model identifier.
Before visiting a shop, find the complete model number in Settings or on the box, including regional suffixes. Confirm with China Mobile that the precise variant is supported, unlocked and eligible for its eSIM service. If buying a phone locally, ask the seller to identify it as a mainland version and verify the intended service before purchase. An “Add eSIM” menu only shows that the phone has an eSIM function; it does not prove carrier or account eligibility.
Use this short pre-visit checklist:
- Record the full model or product number, not just the retail name.
- Ask China Mobile to check that exact identifier against its current device list.
- Confirm that the phone is unlocked and that your account can use the chosen service.
- Ask which identity document is accepted and whether the applicant must appear in person.
- Confirm that the service hall handles smartphone eSIM and whether an appointment is needed.
- Keep your existing SIM active until the new profile is installed and tested.
How activation works for a domestic China Mobile eSIM
For a supported mainland-market smartphone, current manufacturer guidance directs users to a China Mobile service hall. Bring the phone and an identity document accepted for your application; staff can complete verification and guide activation. Confirm document acceptance and shop capability with China Mobile before going. A passport reference in one device guide does not prove that every product accepts every passport or visitor.
The shop may check your model and account, verify identity, issue or convert a line, download the profile and confirm network registration. The steps can vary by service. Follow current operator instructions, and do not delete a working profile or scan a code from an unverified source.
If converting an existing physical SIM, ask when the old card stops working, how to restore the line if the eSIM is removed, and how to transfer or reissue the profile after repair or replacement. An activation code may be single-use or bound to a device. Do not assume a deleted eSIM can be restored by scanning the same code again.
A companion-device eSIM follows a different process. China Mobile’s “One Number, Two Devices” agreement describes linking a supported watch or specified device to an eligible main number, with identity checks and service limitations. It is not a general tourist data profile for an independent smartphone.
What visitors should check before arrival
A domestic China Mobile eSIM can suit someone who needs a local number and meets the operator’s account and device rules. For a short visit, in-person enrolment and identity requirements may make it less convenient than a travel data eSIM. Visitor eligibility is not guaranteed, and the public material reviewed here does not establish a general tourist plan. Treat document acceptance and account access as questions to settle directly with China Mobile.
Before choosing, consider:
- What you need. For local voice service or a mainland number, ask China Mobile about your eligibility. For maps, messaging, bookings and email, a travel data eSIM may be enough, subject to its terms and local requirements.
- Your device variant. Verify the complete model number and whether it accepts a mainland profile.
- Activation location. Smartphone activation may require an operator service hall and identity checks; confirm the right location and allow time.
- Profile installation. Some mainland-supported devices restrict installation of foreign eSIMs while in mainland China. Check your manufacturer’s rules and install a travel profile before arrival if required.
- Voice and authentication. Data-only profiles may not provide a local number, voice calls or SMS. Keep access to your regular number where possible and check roaming charges with your home provider.
- Route and backup. Confirm support separately for mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Save essential addresses and booking details offline, and keep support contacts available.
If a data-focused travel eSIM is a better fit, check the current eSIM options for China before departure. The Kaspersky eSIM Store China destination page (checked November 2, 2026) says purchases must be made outside China; it also notes that profiles purchased before arrival can be installed, used and topped up after arrival, subject to the product terms. This is a travel connectivity option, not a China Mobile domestic number or a China Mobile tariff.
Local operator service and travel eSIM: different use cases
A China Mobile eSIM is a domestic subscriber service for eligible users. Depending on the product and account, it may include a local number and the features associated with that line. It is subject to operator identity, device and enrolment rules. Confirm prepaid or visitor arrangements directly with China Mobile; this guide does not list or compare local plans.
A travel eSIM is commonly intended for mobile data during a trip. It can be prepared before departure, but it may not include a Chinese phone number, ordinary voice or SMS. Network access, activation, data roaming, tethering and supported destinations depend on the specific provider’s terms. Do not assume that every travel profile works the same way or uses China Mobile.
Choose according to your needs. A long-stay visitor who needs local calls or a domestic number can investigate operator enrolment; a visitor who mainly needs data may prefer an option that can be set up in advance. Some phones allow a home SIM for calls or authentication and another eSIM for data, but check device support and home-carrier charges. No eSIM guarantees access to every website, app or service; follow local rules and check availability before relying on a particular service.
Coverage and technology: what you can reasonably expect
China Mobile operates 4G and 5G networks in mainland China. The connection a traveler gets depends on compatible device bands, the profile and account, local network availability, indoor materials, terrain, demand and maintenance. A phone may use 4G where 5G is unavailable or unsuitable.
National infrastructure figures are context, not a route-level guarantee. They do not establish the same experience in every hotel room, subway station, border area, mountain road or event venue. Check current coverage information for your specific destinations and keep an alternative way to access essential information. For travel eSIMs, review the provider’s network access and destination restrictions separately; the country label alone does not identify the serving network.
Installation and first-use checklist
Use China Mobile’s current process for a domestic profile and the travel provider’s instructions for a travel eSIM. Their installation paths are not interchangeable. Before relying on either connection:
- Check the exact device variant using the eSIM compatibility guide.
- Make sure the device is unlocked and has Wi-Fi or another connection if setup requires it.
- Keep the QR code or instructions available on another screen or in a safe offline copy.
- Install the profile where and when its provider permits; some profiles must be added outside the destination.
- Label profiles clearly and select the intended line for mobile data.
- Disable roaming on your home line if you want to avoid unintended charges; enable travel-profile roaming only if its instructions require it.
- Test data, calls and messages separately. Data access does not prove that voice or SMS is included.
- Save support details and do not delete a working profile as a troubleshooting shortcut.
On iPhone, follow the cellular settings and carrier or provider instructions. On Android, use the SIM or mobile-network settings to add an eSIM; menu names vary by model and software. A mainland profile may require a carrier-issued code and in-person verification, while a travel profile may be installed through an app or QR code.
If a profile installs but does not connect, check that the line is enabled, mobile data is assigned to the intended profile, airplane mode is off and any required roaming setting matches the provider’s instructions. Restart or re-register to the network. If the phone requests a new code or still shows no service, contact the provider before removing the profile; it may be device-bound or need to be reissued.
Common questions
Can a visitor buy a China Mobile eSIM in China?
China Mobile supports domestic eSIM, but current public information reviewed here does not confirm a general tourist eSIM or prepaid smartphone offer. Ask whether your document and circumstances qualify before visiting a shop.
Can I activate China Mobile eSIM online?
Current manufacturer guidance for mainland smartphones directs users to an operator service hall for activation and identity verification. Confirm the current process and shop availability with China Mobile.
Will my overseas phone work?
Not necessarily. Regional variants differ, and mainland guidance excludes some models from installing domestic profiles. Have China Mobile check your full model number.
Can I install a travel eSIM after arriving?
It depends on the phone and provider. Apple’s mainland guidance says foreign operator profiles cannot be installed in mainland China on the specified mainland eSIM iPhones. Check your exact model and install before arrival if required.
Does a China Mobile eSIM include calls and SMS?
That depends on the domestic product. A smartphone line and a companion-device profile have different capabilities. Ask the operator about the service you will use. A travel data eSIM should not be treated as a local phone number unless its terms explicitly say so.
Does coverage extend equally everywhere, including Hong Kong and Macao?
No single coverage statement guarantees reception at every location. Hong Kong and Macao are separate service markets; check support for each destination and route.
Before you choose
China Mobile supports eSIM for eligible devices and users in mainland China, but activation depends on the exact phone variant, service type, identity checks and current enrolment rules. Manufacturer guidance points to in-person activation for mainland smartphone profiles and documents regional limits on both domestic and foreign eSIM installation.
Decide whether you need a domestic number or mainly mobile data. Confirm your full model identifier, accepted documents and service-hall availability with China Mobile before travel. If preparing data access in advance is more suitable, review the travel eSIM’s device requirements, installation location and destination conditions. Keep a backup for essential communications.
China Mobile and related names identify the operator discussed. Kaspersky eSIM Store is not affiliated with, endorsed by or an official partner or distributor of China Mobile. It is an app and website that helps travelers choose, arrange and activate a plan for mobile data abroad; it does not operate a mobile network or provide mobile internet. For a trip to China, review the current destination options and conditions before making a decision.
