China Telecom eSIM in China: Availability & Setup

China Telecom eSIM in China: availability, activation and travel advice
China Telecom is a major telecommunications operator in China. It confirmed phone eSIM service in mainland China, announcing commercial-trial availability in 31 provincial-level regions in October 2025. A launch does not guarantee that every handset or traveler can activate a profile: approved devices and identity checks matter. Confirm current requirements with China Telecom before relying on a local eSIM.
This guide covers availability, activation and travel considerations, including the difference between a local line and a travel data eSIM. Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website for choosing, purchasing and activating eSIM for mobile internet on international trips. It is not a mobile operator, network owner or connectivity provider. This article is independent; Kaspersky eSIM Store is not affiliated with China Telecom.
China Telecom eSIM availability
China Telecom’s group announcement, published on 13 October 2025, says its phone eSIM service received approval for commercial trial and went on sale in 31 provincial-level regions in mainland China. The operator said applicants could visit a China Telecom service hall or make an appointment in its app and then go to the selected hall to complete processing. The announcement also notes that China Telecom already supported eSIM in device categories such as smartwatches and connected vehicles before adding phone service.
Apple’s current mainland China eSIM guidance, checked on 26 September 2026, lists China Telecom among the operators supporting eSIM on eligible mainland iPhone models. It says activation takes place at an operator’s physical location, where staff perform identity checks. It also distinguishes mainland-market devices from those purchased abroad: an international iPhone is not automatically eligible to install a mainland carrier profile. The supported model list may change as manufacturers add devices, so check the exact model number and current carrier requirements before visiting.
The service is confirmed, but it is not a universal option for every eSIM phone or applicant. Both device approval and operator processing determine whether activation can proceed.
What visitors should check before a store visit
Before arrival, note the phone’s exact model number and sales region. Ask China Telecom whether that version is approved for mainland eSIM. An eSIM setting only confirms that the phone supports the technology in some circumstances; it does not guarantee that the operator can issue a mainland profile for that model.
China’s communications guidance says foreign nationals may apply for telephone SIM services at self-operated operator halls with a passport or foreign permanent-resident identity card, in person. This is general registration guidance, not a complete statement of eSIM rules. Confirm with the intended China Telecom location which documents it accepts for eSIM and whether additional information is needed.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact phone model and market version | Mainland carrier approval can differ from general eSIM capability. |
| Original identity document | Mobile service registration uses identity verification; the applicant may have to attend personally. |
| Service hall and appointment process | China Telecom describes in-person completion, with app booking as a possible first step. |
| Visitor eligibility for eSIM | General rules for a SIM application do not guarantee that every eSIM case is accepted. |
| Local service availability | The launch announcement covers provincial-level regions, but branch processes may vary. |
Allow time for the in-person process and keep the original document available. If the phone is unsupported or staff cannot verify the applicant for that service, an appointment alone will not resolve the issue. Contact the operator in advance and ask what alternative it can offer.
Device compatibility is a separate requirement
An embedded SIM chip is only one compatibility check. The phone must also meet mainland approval requirements and be eligible for China Telecom provisioning. Apple’s current China guidance lists specified mainland-compatible iPhones and says other models, including those bought outside mainland China, cannot install mainland carrier eSIM profiles. Supported models can change, so check its current list and ask China Telecom.
Android support can depend on manufacturer, regional version, software and certification. Ask about the exact model; eSIM capability advertised for another market does not establish mainland compatibility. A Shanghai municipal report from October 2025 describes launch-era devices and is historical context, not a current catalogue.
Keep three questions distinct:
- Does the phone have eSIM capability? This is a hardware and operating-system question.
- Is this regional model approved for mainland use? Approval may differ between market versions of the same device.
- Can China Telecom provision this customer and model? The operator’s process and identity checks still apply.
A carrier lock or profile limit can also prevent setup. Check for a lock, update the phone and keep it charged. Do not delete an existing eSIM unless you know how to restore it.
Activation and identity verification
China Telecom says applicants can visit a service hall or make an appointment in its app before completing the phone eSIM application at the selected hall. Treat this as an in-person process rather than fully remote activation. Ask the location whether it handles eSIM, requires an appointment and accepts your documents.
The Tianjin Communications Administration’s April 2026 guidance says foreign nationals can apply for telephone SIM services in person at self-operated halls using a passport or foreign permanent-resident identity card. It recommends phones supporting 5G or VoLTE. These are general baseline rules; confirm eSIM-specific requirements with China Telecom.
A practical sequence is:
- Record the phone’s model number and sales region, then check current mainland eSIM eligibility.
- Contact the intended China Telecom hall. Ask if it processes phone eSIM applications, accepts your passport for this service and requires an appointment.
- Bring the original identity document confirmed by the operator. Keep device details and any current SIM accessible if staff ask for them.
- Attend in person for identity checks and device review. An app appointment is preparation, not proof that activation has been completed remotely.
- Follow the staff or phone prompts to install the profile. Keep the phone connected to a reliable network if profile download requires it.
- Before leaving, check that the profile appears and the phone registers successfully. Ask how to contact support if the service later needs attention.
Procedures can vary or change. If needed, prepare a translated note with your phone model and questions. Official foreign-national guidance lists 10000 as China Telecom’s customer service number within China; confirm the support channel and language options for your location.
Prepaid and visitor-oriented options
Travelers may want to know whether China Telecom has a prepaid or tourist-focused eSIM. The public material reviewed for this article confirms the operator’s phone eSIM service and general SIM application routes for foreign nationals, but it does not establish a single nationwide tourist eSIM offer or confirm that every visitor can obtain a prepaid eSIM. Do not infer eligibility, payment method or service features from the existence of local eSIM.
Ask China Telecom whether prepaid or short-stay options are currently available in your destination city and whether the selected service can be provisioned as eSIM on your phone. If eligibility depends on your document or status, request those requirements before visiting. Conditions can change, and local branches may handle applications differently. Use current operator information instead of old travel discussions or assumptions about how prepaid service works elsewhere.
If you mainly need data, a travel eSIM is another option for a compatible device and can be set up before departure. A local line is relevant when you need a domestic subscription and meet its registration and device conditions. The right fit depends on your needs and eligibility; this guide does not compare individual plans.
Coverage and mobile technologies
China Telecom operates mobile services across China, and its 2025 announcement says phone eSIM service launched in 31 provincial-level regions. This describes rollout, not reception at every address. Signal can vary with terrain, buildings, network load, device bands and location; a general coverage statement cannot guarantee service at a hotel, rail route or rural road.
Apple lists LTE and 5G support for China Telecom on eligible iPhones. The communications administration’s guidance for foreign subscribers separately recommends a phone supporting 5G or VoLTE. These references establish broad technology support, not that every handset supports every local frequency or that every service has the same voice, messaging and data functions. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and ask China Telecom about the exact model.
For travel beyond major cities, ask about the route and save tickets, maps and translation resources offline. A travel eSIM may use a partner network under its own terms, and is not identical to a China Telecom line. Confirm its destination and setup instructions; keep your home SIM available if you need your usual number for account verification.
Local eSIM or travel eSIM?
A China Telecom eSIM is a local carrier profile issued under the operator’s registration process, with local service terms, identity checks and mainland device requirements. It may suit someone who needs a local subscription and meets those conditions; China Telecom handles its provisioning and support.
A travel eSIM is designed for use abroad and installed under the travel product’s destination and conditions. It may be data-focused and may not include a local number or ordinary carrier voice and text service. Review its details if you need calls, SMS or a number for local identity checks.
| Situation | Consider |
|---|---|
| You need a local Chinese mobile line | Ask China Telecom about eligible devices, identity checks and service-hall activation. |
| You mainly need mobile data as a visitor | Review a travel eSIM’s destination, device compatibility and setup instructions. |
| Your phone was purchased outside mainland China | Verify local model eligibility; general eSIM support is not enough. |
| You need to keep your usual number available | Check dual-SIM settings and which line is selected for data, calls and messages. |
| Your itinerary includes areas outside large cities | Ask about coverage along the specific route and keep offline information. |
This is a functional distinction, not a ranking. A travel profile may not replace a local number for every use, and a local profile may not be available to every visitor or device. Choose based on what you need and can actually activate.
Kaspersky eSIM Store for travel data
Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website that helps travelers choose, purchase and activate an eSIM for mobile internet abroad. It can help you prepare before or during a trip if your device is compatible. It is not a mobile operator or network owner and does not provide connectivity; the selected travel eSIM connects through its associated network.
Use the China destination page to review current travel eSIM options and check the destination, compatibility, instructions and conditions before deciding. This is a travel data service. If you need a China Telecom number, local identity services or ordinary local calling and SMS, confirm those separately with the operator.
Kaspersky’s public product information describes compatibility checks and installation guidance. Depending on the device, a purchased profile can be installed through on-screen instructions or a QR code. Read the instructions before removing a working profile.
With two SIMs, decide which should handle data and which should keep your usual number available. Review cellular settings, disable home-line data roaming if you do not want to use it, and follow the travel profile’s instructions about roaming. After arrival, confirm the data-line selection and registration.
For setup, see iOS eSIM installation instructions or Android eSIM installation instructions and check the device compatibility guide. Steps vary by device. Confirm compatibility with the provider if your phone was sold for another market.
If a travel data profile suits your needs, you can review eSIM options for China. Check compatibility and current conditions; this is separate from China Telecom service.
Preparation checklist
Before you leave for a service hall or start a travel eSIM setup, use this short checklist:
- Write down the phone’s exact model, sales region and carrier-lock status.
- Decide whether you need a local China Telecom subscription, travel data, or both.
- For a China Telecom eSIM, verify the model, passport eligibility and in-person process with the intended hall.
- Ask whether the location requires an appointment and what original identification to bring.
- Check that the phone software is current and that you can reach its eSIM settings.
- Save travel eSIM setup instructions offline if you intend to use a travel profile.
- Keep home-SIM details and account recovery methods accessible.
- Download key itinerary information for offline use.
- Test the selected data line after setup and keep a support contact for the relevant provider.
Use the list to identify questions early; current operator instructions still apply.
Frequently asked questions
Is China Telecom eSIM available in mainland China?
Yes. China Telecom announced phone eSIM commercial-trial availability across 31 provincial-level regions on 13 October 2025. Application is completed at a service hall, with app appointment booking as a possible first step. A supported and approved device is required.
