Claro eSIM in Colombia: compatibility, setup and travel tips

Claro offers eSIM service in Colombia, but whether you can activate or replace a line depends on the account, device and route you choose. Claro’s current eSIM guidance describes a change from a physical SIM to eSIM for eligible existing prepaid and postpaid customers through Mi Claro or a Claro customer service center. Check your exact phone variant in Claro’s compatibility checker and confirm the steps for your line before you start.

This guide covers Claro’s Colombian mobile service and general travel connectivity choices. Kaspersky eSIM Store is an independent travel eSIM service; it is not Claro, does not operate Claro’s network and does not guarantee coverage. Details checked against Claro Colombia’s eSIM page and coverage map on 3 November 2026. Claro’s separate institutional article about porting is dated 8 February 2024; where it describes customer routes, treat it as background and reconfirm the current process with Claro.

At a glance

  • Claro Colombia publishes an eSIM option and directs customers to check device compatibility before changing a line.
  • The current Claro eSIM page describes conversion through Mi Claro for existing eligible customers, or help at a Claro customer service center. Account eligibility and the available path can depend on the type and status of your line.
  • An eSIM is a digital SIM profile. The phone still needs compatible eSIM hardware and software, and it must be able to use the service. A phone that looks like a supported model may have a different regional or carrier variant.
  • Claro’s coverage map can be checked by location and by displayed network technology. It is a planning reference, not a promise of signal at every address or of a particular speed.
  • A visitor should verify whether Claro will activate the desired type of local line for them, what identification or account details are needed, and whether an in-person visit is required. Do this before relying on a local eSIM as soon as you land.

What Claro eSIM means in Colombia

An eSIM replaces the removable SIM card with a digital subscriber profile stored in a compatible device. The profile connects a line to a mobile operator; it is not a separate internet package by itself. Calls, text messages, data, eligibility, charges and other service conditions depend on the particular Claro line and its terms. Do not assume that every Claro eSIM line includes the same services as another line.

Claro Colombia’s current eSIM page explains the digital SIM option and asks customers to check the phone make and model. It describes a self-service path in Mi Claro for existing prepaid or postpaid customers and also points to Claro customer service centers. The page says a QR code is used to download the profile. A Claro institutional article published on 8 February 2024 also described eSIM requests for existing customers and people seeking to port a number, handled at a customer service center. Since that second article is older, ask Claro whether its porting process and requirements still apply to your situation. (Sources: Claro Colombia, “eSIM / SIM virtual,” checked 3 November 2026; Claro Colombia, “eSIM Claro,” published 8 February 2024.)

These details describe Claro Colombia’s own mobile service. They do not establish that every visitor can obtain a new local line remotely, that any device can be activated, or that a particular plan or price is available. If you are not already a Claro customer, confirm the current new-line, number-porting and identity requirements directly with Claro. If you already have a Claro line, ask whether it is eligible for conversion and whether changing the SIM affects any account-specific services.

Local operator service versus a travel eSIM

A local Claro line may suit someone who wants an ongoing Colombian mobile account, or who needs line features attached to their Claro number. The operator controls activation and the terms of that line. A visitor’s eligibility, registration steps and available ways to sign up must be confirmed with Claro; this guide does not make those decisions for the operator.

A travel eSIM is a different option designed for connectivity while away from home. Kaspersky eSIM Store helps travelers browse and arrange travel eSIM connectivity through its app and website. It is not a Colombian mobile operator and does not itself own or provide radio coverage. A travel eSIM should not be assumed to provide a Colombian phone number, ordinary voice calling or SMS. Check the individual product information for what it supports, and use a separate voice/SMS line if you need those functions.

The two approaches answer different needs. If you need your current number for calls or account verification, keep access to that line and check your handset’s dual-SIM features before travel. If your immediate need is mobile data, compare the available travel connectivity options and their stated destination and device requirements. Do not assume that a travel eSIM is a Claro tariff or that choosing one activates a Claro account.

Check your phone before requesting activation

Start with the exact model number and regional variant shown in the phone’s settings, on its original packaging or in the manufacturer’s account. Marketing names are not enough: one device family can include versions with different radio or eSIM features by sales region. A device that supports eSIM in one market may not have the same capability in another.

Then check all of the following:

  1. eSIM support for your exact variant. Use Claro’s current device checker and the phone manufacturer’s documentation. If the exact variant is not listed or the result is unclear, ask Claro to confirm it before requesting a profile.
  2. Carrier or network restrictions. A phone locked to another provider may not accept a different operator’s profile. Ask the seller or original operator whether the device is unlocked and eligible for use with Claro.
  3. Current software and account access. Install the operating-system update recommended by the manufacturer, make sure you can unlock the phone, and have access to the relevant Claro account or identity verification route.
  4. A reliable internet connection. Downloading the profile requires connectivity. Have Wi-Fi available when you follow Claro’s instructions, particularly if the physical SIM is being replaced or the phone has no working mobile service.
  5. Profile capacity and dual-SIM behavior. A phone may store more than one profile yet allow only a particular combination to be active at once. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact device and decide which line should handle mobile data, calls and messages.

If you are checking a travel eSIM as an alternative, use its own device requirements as well. You can read the eSIM device compatibility guide and verify support for the exact handset variant before purchase. “eSIM compatible” alone does not confirm that every operator or travel eSIM will work with a locked phone, in every region or with every dual-SIM configuration.

Kaspersky eSIM Store is a place to review travel eSIM options; its destination page does not represent Claro’s local tariffs. You can browse Colombia in Kaspersky eSIM Store and review the current product information before deciding whether it fits your trip.

How to request a Claro eSIM

The following is a preparation guide, not a substitute for Claro’s live instructions. The operator may adjust its app flow, account checks or service-center process. Follow the prompts shown by Claro at the time of your request.

If you already have a Claro line

  1. Confirm the exact phone variant with Claro’s compatibility checker and make sure the device is unlocked for the intended service.
  2. Sign in to Mi Claro using the account for the line you want to convert. Claro’s published eSIM page describes a conversion route for eligible existing prepaid and postpaid customers. If the option is not shown, contact Claro or ask at a customer service center rather than assuming that the line is ineligible or that another menu item is equivalent.
  3. Before approving a SIM replacement, read Claro’s current instructions for the line. Confirm what happens to the physical SIM, any active services and access to the number during the change. Do not remove a working SIM or delete an existing profile until Claro tells you the replacement is ready and explains the order of steps.
  4. Keep the phone connected to the internet. If Claro supplies a QR code, use the camera or the phone’s built-in mobile-plan settings as instructed by Claro. The code is for the intended line and should be treated as private; do not publish it or send it to someone you do not trust.
  5. Wait for the phone and Claro to confirm activation. Check that the expected line appears in settings and that the services you need work. If activation stalls, use Claro’s support route and keep the request or account details available.

Claro’s page says the QR is sent to the customer’s personal email and also gives a customer service center route. Delivery and recovery steps can change or depend on the account, so check the instructions displayed for your request. Do not expect that a profile can be moved to another phone simply by scanning the same code again. Ask Claro about replacement or transfer before changing devices.

If you are new to Claro or visiting Colombia

A visitor may need to complete account, identity or registration steps before the operator can issue a local line. Requirements can depend on the service and the customer’s circumstances. Claro’s currently published eSIM page is clearest about converting an existing eligible line; it is not enough to establish that every traveler can buy and activate a new Colombian eSIM online. Ask Claro directly whether it can issue the type of line you want, which documents or local details it needs, whether a service center visit is necessary, and how the line is charged and maintained.

If you plan to port a number, confirm that the number and account qualify, who must request the port, how long the change may take and what happens to service in the meantime. Claro’s 2024 institutional article described porting requests at a customer service center. Because this is an older description, verify the current procedure and any required documents with Claro before travel or before ending service with your current provider.

If you need data immediately on arrival, arrange a connectivity option that you have independently confirmed will work on your handset and at your destination. Keep Wi-Fi, roaming from your existing provider or another suitable connection available until your intended line is active. Do not rely on an unconfirmed in-person purchase or activation to access maps, transport details or account verification after landing.

Plan coverage around your actual stops

Colombia includes dense cities, mountain terrain, rural areas and long stretches between population centers. Signal can change with terrain, buildings, distance from a site, weather, congestion and the phone’s supported bands and radio configuration. A national footprint or a signal result for one city does not establish service at a particular hotel, road, trail or indoor location.

Claro’s official coverage map allows a visitor to inspect locations and select displayed technologies, including GSM, 3G, 4G and 5G. Search the map for each important stop, zoom to the relevant neighborhood or coordinates, and check the technology you expect to use. (Source: Claro Colombia, Coverage Map, checked 3 November 2026.) If a route crosses several departments or remote areas, inspect intermediate points as well as the endpoints. Save offline maps and essential addresses before setting out.

Treat a map as an estimate. It cannot promise indoor reception, continuous service during a drive, a specific speed, or availability at the moment you arrive. A device may also need support for the local radio technology and the relevant network bands. If reliable service is important for work or safety, ask Claro about the exact area and carry an independent backup plan. Emergency calling options and access can vary by handset, network and location; do not rely on a single connection for an emergency plan.

Choosing between Claro and a travel eSIM

Think first about the job the connection needs to do. The table is a general decision aid; it does not describe the terms of any particular Claro line or travel eSIM.

Your need Questions to resolve
Keep an established Claro number Ask Claro whether your line can be converted, what happens to existing services, and how to restore service if the phone is replaced.
Obtain a new Colombian line Confirm eligibility, identity and registration steps, sign-up location, payment arrangements, number availability and current service conditions with Claro.
Use mobile data during a visit Compare options that are confirmed for your exact phone and route. Check the destination, activation instructions, data service, validity and any limitations shown for the specific option.
Retain access to a home number Check your home operator’s roaming and dual-SIM settings. Decide which line handles data and how calls or messages are billed before leaving.
Travel beyond a major city Check coverage for the whole route, save offline information and consider a separate backup connection where it matters.

A travel eSIM can be convenient when you want to set up mobile data without first arranging a new local operator account, but availability and conditions vary by product and destination. It may not replace a local number, voice service, SMS or an established operator relationship.

Do not choose based only on a headline or a generic country label. Read the current product details, confirm when installation and service begin, check whether the phone must be unlocked, and understand what to do if setup fails. If the offer does not answer a requirement you have—such as a local number, voice calls or service in a specific remote area—contact the provider or choose a solution whose terms clearly cover that need.

Using two lines on one phone

Some phones can keep a Claro profile and a travel eSIM installed, but the supported combination depends on the exact model and its software. “Stored” does not necessarily mean “active at the same time.” Review the manufacturer’s dual-SIM instructions and set the preferred line for mobile data, voice calls and messages. Menu names vary across devices.

Before departure, consider these settings:

  • Choose deliberately which line supplies mobile data. A phone can use the wrong line if its default settings or automatic switching behavior are left unchanged.
  • Understand the home operator’s roaming settings and charges. Keeping a line enabled for incoming messages or calls can have billing consequences under its terms.
  • Turn off data roaming on a line when you do not intend it to use roaming, while following the travel eSIM’s own setup directions for its data line. A data-roaming toggle can be required for some travel eSIMs; consult that product’s instructions rather than copying a setting from another provider.
  • Label profiles clearly, for example “home” and “travel,” if the phone provides that option. Confirm which number is used before placing an important call or sending a message.
  • Do not delete a profile to troubleshoot unless its operator confirms that you can reinstall or replace it. Some activation credentials are single-use or tied to the original order or device.

If you want to move your Claro eSIM to a replacement phone, contact Claro first. If you want to move a travel profile, use the travel provider’s procedure. The transfer rules of one profile do not automatically apply to another.

Frequently asked questions

Does Claro offer eSIM in Colombia?

Yes. Claro Colombia publishes an eSIM option and provides instructions for eligible existing customers to request conversion through Mi Claro or with help at a customer service center. Check the current operator instructions and your exact phone variant before starting.

Can a tourist get a Claro eSIM?

The public information reviewed for this guide does not establish that every tourist can obtain a new Claro line or complete activation remotely. Ask Claro what new-line or porting options are currently available to you, which identification and account details are required, where to apply and whether the eSIM can be activated on your exact device. Make a backup connectivity plan until service is confirmed.

Can I use Claro and a travel eSIM together?

Possibly, if your specific phone supports the needed combination of active SIMs. Follow the manufacturer’s dual-SIM instructions, choose the intended data line and check roaming settings and charges for each service. Confirm whether each eSIM can remain installed or must be activated in a particular order.

Will a travel eSIM give me a Colombian phone number?

Do not assume so. Travel eSIMs are often intended for mobile data, while a local operator line may provide other services under its own terms. Review the specific travel eSIM product information and arrange a separate voice/SMS option if you need one.
