Google Pixel 4 eSIM Compatibility & Setup

Google Pixel 4 eSIM: compatibility, setup and travel use

The Google Pixel 4 supports eSIM. Google’s Pixel Help guidance lists Pixel 4 and later phones as compatible, so the standard Pixel 4 can use a digital SIM alongside its nano-SIM capability. Check the individual handset before buying a plan: carrier lock status, regional configuration, Android software and the provider’s eligibility rules can affect setup. The clearest first checks are the phone’s EID and its option to add an eSIM.

This guide covers compatibility, setup, travel data and common issues. Menu wording varies by Android version or language; follow the nearest option on your phone.

An eSIM-capable phone does not guarantee that every carrier or plan will activate on it. Google’s model-level information is a strong starting point, but the operator or eSIM provider still determines plan eligibility. If the phone is used, imported or carrier-sold, check it directly rather than relying on a listing or the previous owner’s experience.

Regional and carrier differences

Pixel 4 phones were sold through different markets and carrier channels. A carrier may require an unlocked handset, an eligible account or a supported plan; some providers restrict eSIM on prepaid plans or specific devices.

A carrier-sold phone can remain network-locked, so another provider’s profile may fail despite the eSIM hardware. Ask the original carrier about unlock status, especially for a used or imported phone. An unlocked device still needs an eligible plan and supported destination network.

Regional variants may support different radio bands. A profile can install while the phone still has limited local coverage. The standard Pixel 4 is an LTE-generation phone; eSIM does not add 5G. Check exact device and network requirements if a particular service matters.

Before purchase, ask whether the provider supports eSIM activation on Pixel 4, needs an IMEI or EID, or requires setup in the destination country. Confirm all stops are included in the plan.

Check your Pixel 4 before choosing a plan

Check Android settings and the provider’s rules. A visible EID and provider confirmation are useful before purchase.

  1. Find the EID. Open Settings → About phone → SIM status and look for EID. Depending on software, the path may be About phone → Status information → SIM status. The EID is a long identifier for the embedded SIM; it is different from an IMEI, phone number or QR code.
  2. Look for eSIM setup. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs or Mobile network and look for Add SIM, Download a SIM instead? or Set up an eSIM. Names can vary slightly. You do not need to activate anything simply to check the menu.
  3. Check identifiers if requested. In Settings → About phone, find the IMEI details. A provider may use the IMEI or EID to check eligibility. Share those numbers only through an official provider support or activation flow.
  4. Confirm the phone is unlocked. Ask the original carrier or seller if you are unsure. A physical SIM working in the phone does not prove that another carrier’s eSIM will be accepted.
  5. Confirm the travel plan. Check destination coverage, data allowance, validity, start condition and whether the plan is data-only. Make sure the provider accepts Pixel 4 before checkout.

If EID is missing or the provider refuses the device, pause. Restart on Wi-Fi, install available Android updates and check again. If EID is still absent, contact Google or the seller; if present but setup is unavailable, ask about eligibility and carrier lock.

Compatibility checklist

  • [ ] Settings shows an EID and an option to add or set up an eSIM.
  • [ ] The phone is unlocked for the provider you intend to use.
  • [ ] The provider confirms support for Pixel 4 and your destination.
  • [ ] The allowance, validity period and activation timing suit your itinerary.
  • [ ] You have Wi-Fi for setup and a way to contact the provider if activation stalls.

For a quick cross-check before choosing a plan, check your device. The phone’s settings and the provider’s eligibility rules should agree.

Install and activate an eSIM

Install over Wi-Fi and keep the provider’s setup details available. Display any QR code on another screen or use a printed copy. Codes may be single-use; check the profile before scanning again.

Prepare first

Check whether validity starts at purchase, installation or first connection. Make sure the Pixel has battery and available Android updates. If you need your usual number for calls or verification texts, leave the home SIM available and know which line handles each service.

Do not delete an existing eSIM as a troubleshooting shortcut. Some profiles cannot be transferred or reinstalled without a replacement code. If you are replacing one, confirm that you can access the provider account or support channel that issued it.

Add the profile in Android

  1. Connect the Pixel 4 to Wi-Fi and open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & internet → SIMs (or Mobile network) and choose Add SIM or Set up an eSIM.
  3. Select the option to download a SIM. Scan the provider’s QR code, or choose manual entry if the provider supplied activation details in that format.
  4. Review the plan details and approve the download. Leave Wi-Fi on and wait for the profile to finish installing.
  5. Give the profile a clear label, such as Travel data, so it is easy to distinguish from your regular line.
  6. If the plan starts on first connection, leave the travel line off until the provider’s instructions say to use it.

Select the travel line for data

When you are ready to connect, open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, choose the travel eSIM and switch on Use this SIM. Set it as the preferred SIM for Mobile data. Enable Roaming for that eSIM if its instructions require it. Review the home SIM’s roaming settings separately, since charges depend on your home carrier’s terms.

Keep the home SIM enabled for calls or messages if your carrier permits it. Dual-SIM behavior depends on Android and carrier support. A data-only travel eSIM usually has no ordinary phone number, voice service or SMS unless the plan says so; internet calling and messaging apps can use data.

An installed profile may not connect until it reaches an eligible network. At your destination, turn on the travel line, select it for data, enable roaming if instructed and wait for registration. Test a webpage or map before relying on it.

See the Android eSIM installation instructions for your Pixel. The iOS eSIM installation instructions apply when preparing an iPhone or another iOS device.

Using Pixel 4 mobile data while travelling

Connect soon after landing. Install the profile over Wi-Fi before the trip if allowed. If validity starts at first connection, keep the line off until arrival. At the destination, enable it, select it for mobile data and turn on roaming if the provider requires it. Allow time to register, then test a map or webpage.

Keep your home number available. Leave the home SIM enabled if its roaming terms suit you, and select the travel eSIM for data. Check call and SMS charges with your carrier; incoming calls and texts remain subject to the home plan.

Travel through several countries. Confirm that each stop is included and that the plan remains valid for the whole route. A signal indicator does not mean the profile is authorized for data in every country. At a border, give the phone time to select a network. Use manual network selection only when the provider recommends it.

Conserve data. Download maps and media on Wi-Fi, limit background downloads and monitor usage in Android settings and provider tools. Counters may reset on different schedules. Turn the travel line off when finished, but do not erase its profile until you know whether it can be reinstalled.

Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website where you can choose, arrange and activate an eSIM with a mobile-data plan for an international trip. Review the destination, allowance, validity and activation conditions for the plan you select. Actual service depends on the plan’s arrangements and local network availability; the Store is not a mobile operator and does not guarantee coverage in a particular location.

Troubleshooting common eSIM problems

Avoid deleting the profile as a first step, because an activation code may not work a second time. Note the on-screen error, check whether the profile appears under SIMs, and compare the phone’s settings with the provider’s instructions.

EID is missing. Check Settings → About phone → SIM status and make sure you are looking for EID rather than IMEI. Restart and install any available system update, then check again. If it remains absent, ask Google support or the seller to verify the device configuration before buying a plan.

There is no Add SIM option. Confirm Wi-Fi works, restart the phone and look under Network & internet, SIMs and Mobile network. If EID is present but the option is not, contact the carrier or seller to ask whether the model’s regional or carrier configuration affects eSIM activation.

The QR code will not scan. Display it at full size and brightness on a second screen, keep the full code visible, and clean the Pixel camera lens. Do not crop or alter it. If the provider offers manual entry, use the supplied details; otherwise request help through its official support. Keep the QR code private because it can grant access to the profile.

Profile installed, but no service. Check that the destination is covered and the plan is active. Confirm Use this SIM is on, the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data, and roaming is enabled if required. Toggle Airplane mode once, then restart. Leave network selection on automatic unless the provider recommends another choice.

Connected, but apps have no internet. Confirm data is assigned to the travel eSIM and check its allowance and validity. Review data limits. Enter APN details only if the provider supplies exact values. VPN, private DNS or data-saving settings can affect access; test more than one app.

Activation is stuck or the code appears used. Keep Wi-Fi connected and wait for the provider’s stated setup time. Do not repeatedly scan or remove a pending profile. Ask the provider how to recover or reissue it. Have the order reference, Pixel model, Android version and exact error ready. Share EID or IMEI only through a secure official support flow.

Service is slow or intermittent. Indoor location, congestion, coverage and radio bands affect performance. Move to an open area, toggle Airplane mode once and check the network name. Report persistent issues with location and time to the provider.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Pixel 4 support eSIM?

Yes. Google’s Pixel Help guidance says Pixel 4 and later phones work with eSIM. Confirm the EID, setup option, carrier unlock and provider eligibility on your own handset.

Can I use a physical SIM and eSIM together?

Pixel phones from Pixel 3a onward can use one physical SIM and one eSIM with Dual SIM Dual Standby, subject to carrier support. Select the line you want for mobile data and set calling or messaging preferences separately. Available services can differ by carrier.

Does eSIM mean Pixel 4 has 5G?

No. eSIM and 5G are separate features. The standard Google Pixel 4 is an LTE-generation device; a 5G plan cannot add 5G hardware to it.

Will a travel eSIM give me a phone number?

Many travel plans are data-only. They do not include regular voice calls, SMS or a local number unless the plan explicitly lists those features. Internet messaging apps may work over data.

Can I install before leaving?

Often, yes, if the provider permits it. Check when validity begins. If it starts on first network connection, install on Wi-Fi as directed and keep the travel line off until the intended start time.

What if the EID is not shown?

Check About phone → SIM status and the original packaging if available. If it remains missing, have Google or the seller verify the device. When settings and provider checks disagree, do not rely on the model name alone.

Final device check and trip eSIM choice

Before choosing a plan for the Google Pixel 4, confirm that Settings shows an EID and an option to add an eSIM, and that the phone is unlocked. Ask the provider whether it accepts Pixel 4, covers every country on your route and requires any particular activation steps. Compare the allowance, validity, start condition and data-only limits with your expected use.

When those checks are complete, choose a plan that fits the trip, install the profile over Wi-Fi, label it clearly and select it for mobile data when you are ready to connect. Keep the home SIM’s roaming terms in mind, monitor usage and save the provider’s support details before departure. The handset’s eSIM capability is only one part of compatibility; the plan, carrier rules, destination network and local coverage matter too.
