Google Pixel 8a eSIM Compatibility & Setup

Google Pixel 8a eSIM compatibility and setup guide
Short answer: Google Pixel 8a supports eSIM. Google lists eSIM for its US model GKWS6, Japan model GZPFO and rest-of-world model GPJ41. A carrier lock, local configuration or plan rules can still affect activation, so check your own handset in Settings before buying.
Google Pixel 8a eSIM at a glance
| Item | What to know |
|---|---|
| eSIM support | Yes; Google lists it in the published specifications for Pixel 8a regional variants. |
| Model identifiers shown by Google | GKWS6 (US, 5G mmWave + Sub-6 GHz); GZPFO (Japan, Sub-6 GHz); GPJ41 (rest of world, Sub-6 GHz). |
| Physical SIM | Pixel 8a specifications include a nano-SIM alongside eSIM capability. SIM availability and operator provisioning vary. |
| Device identifiers | EID is used for eSIM; an operator may also ask for IMEI or IMEI 2. |
| Main checks | Look for an EID and an option to add or download a SIM; confirm the phone is unlocked and the provider supports eSIM activation on it. |
| Travel use | Keep your usual line available if useful, and select the travel eSIM for mobile data when appropriate. |
Does Google Pixel 8a support eSIM?
The regional variants differ in model identifier, radio bands and local configuration. Those differences do not remove eSIM from the three variants Google lists, but local carrier certification, restrictions and coverage can still affect service. Check the model number and the settings on your own phone.
Carrier status is separate from eSIM hardware. A locked phone may show an EID and eSIM menus but refuse another provider’s profile. Ask the seller or carrier whether the phone is unlocked and can accept third-party eSIMs. If told eSIM is unavailable, request the exact model number and the reason: device configuration, carrier lock or local service restriction.
Check compatibility before buying a travel eSIM
Confirm that the phone can store an eSIM profile, is unlocked, and can use a provider’s plan for your destination. Check the data allowance, validity period and installation requirements before payment.
- [ ] In Settings, find an EID or an option to add or download an eSIM.
- [ ] Confirm with the seller or carrier that the Google Pixel 8a is unlocked for other providers.
- [ ] Check that the eSIM provider supports Pixel/Android activation and the installation method you intend to use.
- [ ] Confirm that the destination country or region is included in the plan’s coverage details.
- [ ] Read the data amount, validity period, activation requirements and any fair-use or hotspot conditions.
- [ ] Make sure you will have Wi-Fi or another internet connection during installation.
- [ ] Keep access to the email, account or QR code used to retrieve the eSIM instructions.
Find the EID and eSIM controls
Find the EID in Settings; menu wording can vary by Android version:
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Open SIM status and look for EID.
Also open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs and look for Add SIM or Set up an eSIM. Labels can vary by software version. An EID indicates eSIM capability, not an unlocked phone or provider acceptance. If both the EID and eSIM option are missing, restart, update Android, confirm the model number and ask Google support or the seller to check the device before buying a plan.
Before choosing a plan, verify the whole activation chain. Ask the seller or current carrier to confirm that the phone is unlocked; an eSIM option alone does not prove that another provider’s profile will be accepted. If you are buying a used phone, ask the seller to remove account restrictions and show the eSIM controls in Settings. Keep the EID and IMEI private: share them only with a provider or carrier through its trusted support channel when requested. A plan can also have its own device, destination and activation requirements, so check those details before payment.
Also compare the label on the phone with the listing and receipt if the device was imported or refurbished. Android wording can change after an update, and a missing shortcut may not tell the whole story; check both the EID and the SIM setup menu. If the provider uses a device eligibility check, submit the requested model or identifier privately and resolve any mismatch before completing an order. A useful pre-purchase check is to compare three things side by side: the phone’s model identifier, the EID/eSIM control in Settings and the provider’s eligibility rules. If one does not match, pause and ask the seller or provider to clarify before paying. This is especially helpful for imported, refurbished or carrier-supplied phones, where the retail description may not explain the current lock or regional configuration. Check your device before choosing a package. Do not rely only on the Pixel name or a general compatibility list: a carrier lock can prevent activation even when the phone has eSIM hardware.
Install and activate an eSIM on Google Pixel 8a
Use Wi-Fi during setup unless the provider says otherwise. Display the QR code on another screen or use manual details if available. Do not delete a profile before checking the provider’s reinstallation rules.
- Get the plan details. Check the destination and when validity begins. Installation, activation and the start of validity can be different events; follow the selected plan’s terms.
- Open setup. Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM. Labels can vary by Android release.
- Add the profile. Scan the provider’s QR code or enter the supplied activation details manually. Keep the code private.
- Confirm the download. Follow the prompts, keep Wi-Fi connected and wait for the profile to appear.
- Name the line. Label it “Travel data” or another clear name, then check the current defaults for calls, messages and data.
- Choose the data SIM. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data if desired. Keep your usual line for calls or messages if your carrier allows it.
- Follow the activation instructions. Some plans activate during installation; others require you to turn the line on or wait until arrival. Enable the eSIM when the provider says to do so. Turn on data roaming for that eSIM only if the plan’s instructions require it.
- Check service. Once the plan should be active, verify that the eSIM is switched on, selected for data and connected to an available partner network. Open a web page or a map while Wi-Fi is off to confirm that mobile data is working.
See the Android eSIM installation instructions for Pixel 8a. The iOS eSIM installation instructions may help if you are also preparing an Apple device.
Installation is not the same as activation
Installation downloads a profile; activation enables it for network registration. A plan’s validity may begin at installation, first connection, a scheduled date or another event in its terms. Read those terms before scanning, especially when preparing early. Follow any instruction to wait until arrival before enabling the line or data roaming.
If an attempt stalls, check whether the profile already appears under SIMs before trying again. Some QR codes are single-use. Settings shows whether a profile is installed, while the provider must confirm the plan’s activation status.
Use the travel eSIM for mobile data
Before leaving, decide how the lines should work. You may keep your home SIM for calls or messages and select the travel eSIM for data, but your home carrier may charge roaming fees. Review its terms and disable data roaming on that line if appropriate. A travel data eSIM does not include a regular number, calls or SMS unless its plan says otherwise.
On arrival, turn off airplane mode, enable the travel profile, select it for mobile data and check whether the plan requires data roaming. Allow time to register. A plan may connect only inside its listed destinations; signal and speed depend on local networks, location, congestion, device bands and plan terms.
Consider three common travel arrangements:
- One-country holiday: Check that the destination is included, set the travel profile as the data line on arrival, and manage roaming on your home SIM.
- Multi-stop itinerary: Confirm every country is covered, then match the allowance and validity to the full route.
- Work trip: Keep the home line for important calls or verification only if your carrier permits it and you understand any charges; use travel data for internet-based messaging.
After switching lines, confirm the choice saved and mobile data is on. Calls, data and messages may use different SIMs. Wi-Fi calling, voice and SMS depend on the carrier and are not promised by a data-only plan.
Choosing a plan for the trip
Estimate your use: navigation and messaging need less data than video calls or streaming. Check hotspot rules, destinations, validity, recharge options and speed conditions. For a multi-stop route, verify each country rather than relying on a plan’s name.
Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website where you can choose, arrange and activate an eSIM with a mobile-data plan for an international trip. Compare destination, allowance, duration and price, and check when the plan begins. Once the phone is verified and coverage confirmed, choose a plan for the trip. Service runs on supported local mobile networks under the selected plan’s conditions.
Troubleshooting Google Pixel 8a eSIM problems
If setup or mobile data does not work, check one setting at a time. Start with the profile and plan status, then check signal, data selection and roaming. Avoid deleting the profile or resetting network settings until you understand the provider’s recovery process.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| No “Add eSIM” option | Find EID under Settings → About phone → SIM status; update and restart Android; confirm the model number and ask the seller or Google support to verify the unit. |
| QR code will not scan | Increase screen brightness on the device showing the code, clean the camera, use another display, or choose manual entry if the provider supports it. Check that the code is meant for this order and has not already been used. |
| Profile download fails | Reconnect to stable Wi-Fi, turn off any VPN temporarily if it interferes with setup, restart the phone and try again once. Check whether the plan requires provider-side approval or activation first. |
| eSIM is installed but has no signal | Confirm the line is enabled, airplane mode is off, the destination is covered and the phone is not carrier-locked. Give network registration time; then restart or manually select a supported network if provider instructions allow. |
| Signal appears but there is no internet | Select the travel eSIM for mobile data, make sure Mobile data is on, check the plan status and remaining data, then enable data roaming for that profile if required by the plan. |
| Data uses the wrong SIM | Reopen Settings → Network & internet → SIMs and check the default for mobile data. Also check whether automatic data switching is enabled and whether the home SIM has roaming enabled. |
| Network connects, but some apps do not | Turn off Wi-Fi to test cellular data; check app data permissions, Data Saver, any VPN and the plan’s terms. Try a browser page and a second app before changing network settings. |
| Activation code seems invalid | Verify that letters and numbers were entered exactly, check the order and provider instructions, and ask the provider whether a replacement code is needed. Do not post the code publicly. |
If data fails, confirm you are in a covered area, toggle airplane mode or restart, and check that date and time are automatic. Change APN settings only with values supplied by the eSIM provider.
An EID does not remove a carrier restriction, and an installed profile does not prove the plan is active. If activation is rejected, ask the carrier to confirm unlock status and the provider to check the profile. Share device identifiers only through trusted support. Contact the provider before reusing a QR code after a reset or device change.
Frequently asked questions
Does every Google Pixel 8a support eSIM?
Yes. Google lists eSIM for its three Pixel 8a regional variants. Verify the EID or setup menu, unlock status and provider support on your own phone.
Can I use two eSIMs at the same time?
Google says Pixel 7 and later can use two eSIM profiles at once when the carrier supports it. This does not guarantee all providers or simultaneous data use.
Does a travel eSIM include calls and SMS?
Usually it is for data only. App messaging uses data; ordinary SMS and calls depend on your home line unless the chosen plan explicitly includes them.
Can I install the profile before my flight?
Often, but timing rules vary. Check whether validity begins at installation, activation or first connection, and follow the selected plan’s instructions.
Final device check before your trip
Google Pixel 8a is listed as eSIM-capable, including the GKWS6, GZPFO and GPJ41 regional variants. Before choosing a travel plan, make sure your particular phone shows an EID or an eSIM setup option, is unlocked, and can be activated by the provider for your destination. Then check the plan’s coverage, data allowance, validity and activation timing. Keep the QR code and account details safe, install with a reliable connection, and confirm which SIM is selected for mobile data when you arrive. A few minutes of checking before departure can prevent avoidable setup problems and help you choose an eSIM that fits the trip.
