MTS eSIM in Serbia: What to Check

MTS eSIM in Serbia: activation, coverage and travel checks

If you are travelling to Serbia, MTS is one of the local mobile services you may consider for a Serbian number and mobile connectivity. Its official customer help information confirms eSIM support for postpaid and selected prepaid services, including tourist prepaid categories. The practical route depends on whether you are a new visitor, an existing MTS customer replacing a physical SIM, or a traveller who mainly needs data. Check the current conditions directly with MTS before you buy: eligibility, device support, registration steps and the way an eSIM is delivered can change.

This guide explains what MTS currently publishes about eSIM, what to verify before travelling, and how a local operator eSIM differs from a travel eSIM. It does not list plan names, prices, allowances or validity periods. Those details are specific to individual offers and are deliberately left for MTS’s current official sales pages.

What MTS eSIM means for a visitor

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile installed on a compatible device. It can take the place of a removable SIM for a mobile subscription, while the phone’s SIM settings determine which line handles mobile data, calls and messages. The eSIM itself does not make every handset compatible: the phone must have eSIM hardware and software enabled for its particular model and regional version, and the operator must support that variant.

MTS’s customer support page, in its “Mobile services” FAQ section, says eSIM is available to its postpaid customers and to users of selected prepaid categories, including tourist-oriented options. The same page says a prepaid eSIM can be purchased through the MTS website or at an MTS shop; postpaid customers can request service through customer support channels or select eSIM during an online postpaid purchase. Existing postpaid customers and registered prepaid customers may request a SIM-to-eSIM replacement. (MTS Customer Support, “Mobile services” FAQ, checked 31 October 2026.)

That confirms that MTS offers eSIM in Serbia, but it does not mean every visitor can complete every step remotely. A tourist should establish whether the chosen prepaid product is currently available to non-residents, whether registration or identity verification is required, where the eSIM can be purchased, and whether the online flow works with a foreign payment method and contact details. MTS’s help text says an unregistered prepaid number must first be registered before an eSIM replacement request can be made, and directs the customer to a shop for that process. Ask MTS which documents are accepted for your specific situation rather than assuming that an online checkout alone completes all formalities.

MTS also distinguishes between ordering an eSIM and installing it. The support page says that instructions and installation parameters are sent to the email address entered with the request. It advises keeping that document because it may be needed to use the QR code again or move the profile to another device. The exact procedure can differ depending on how the profile was purchased, the handset and the account type, so follow the instructions supplied with your own order. (MTS Customer Support, “Mobile services” FAQ, checked 31 October 2026.)

Is MTS eSIM suitable for a short trip?

It can be a useful option if you want a Serbian mobile subscription with the functions included in the selected local service. A local operator eSIM may be relevant when you want a local number, expect to make ordinary calls or send SMS under the offer’s terms, plan to stay for a while, or prefer a continuing account with the operator. What is included depends on the specific prepaid or postpaid service, so confirm the terms directly before purchase.

A traveller who only needs mobile data may have a different decision. A travel eSIM is designed around data access for a destination or region, and it can be installed before departure if its provider’s instructions allow that. It usually does not replace a conventional local mobile subscription: do not assume that it includes a Serbian telephone number, ordinary voice calls or SMS unless the displayed terms explicitly say so. You can often keep your home SIM active for calls or verification messages while selecting the travel eSIM for data, but simultaneous line use depends on the device and its configuration.

The two approaches solve different needs. A local MTS eSIM connects you to a domestic operator service and its account conditions. A travel eSIM provides a separate profile intended for travel connectivity, which may be easier to prepare in advance. Decide based on the functions you need, the registration steps you can complete, your expected route and the current terms shown before checkout. Do not compare them using an old price or an allowance copied from an expired promotion.

How to request and install an MTS eSIM

The first step is to identify which situation applies to you. A new visitor looking for a prepaid line, an existing postpaid customer and a registered prepaid customer can have different request routes. MTS’s customer FAQ describes online or shop purchase for prepaid eSIM, customer-service or shop requests for postpaid eSIM, and a replacement route for eligible existing lines. For postpaid, eSIM may also be selected during the online service purchase. As these processes can be updated, verify the live route with MTS before you travel or visit a store. (MTS Customer Support, “Mobile services” FAQ, checked 31 October 2026.)

After purchase or approval, read the installation message carefully. MTS says the setup instructions and profile parameters are sent to the email address supplied with the request. Use an email account you can open while travelling, and save the message securely. If MTS gives you a QR code, you will normally need another screen to display it while the phone scans it, unless the phone supports adding the profile from a saved image or using a manual code. Follow the operator’s instructions for your device and do not share the activation details with anyone: a QR code or activation code can be tied to the profile and may expose access to the line.

A simple preparation sequence is:

  1. Confirm that your exact phone variant supports eSIM and is not restricted by a carrier lock. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and the MTS compatibility information; similar model names can have different SIM capabilities in different markets. You can also review eSIM device compatibility.
  2. Decide whether you need a local number, data only, or both. Ask MTS which current prepaid or postpaid route matches that need and whether you can complete it as a visitor.
  3. Confirm any registration or identification steps, accepted documents, payment methods and whether the eSIM will be delivered online or issued at a shop.
  4. Keep a reliable internet connection available during installation. MTS’s activation guidance says the phone needs Wi-Fi or another SIM with internet access to download and register the profile.
  5. Install the profile by following the instructions supplied by MTS. Label the line clearly in your phone’s settings, for example “Serbia” or “MTS”, so you can tell it apart from your home SIM.
  6. Choose which line should handle mobile data, calls and messages. If you want to avoid using your home line for roaming data, turn off data roaming for that line and select the intended line for mobile data. Settings names vary by phone.
  7. Test the connection before depending on it for navigation or account access. Keep your Wi-Fi option available until the new profile registers and mobile data works.

The MTS business help page describes QR-code installation and recommends connecting the phone to Wi-Fi or using another SIM with internet during setup. It also advises keeping the voucher with the QR code for possible reinstallation or a device change. Because that document covers business support, treat it as general installation guidance rather than a guarantee that every consumer order uses the same voucher process. Your own consumer instructions take precedence. (MTS Business Customer Support, “How do I activate an eSIM?”, checked 31 October 2026.)

Before you leave home

A few checks can prevent a last-minute problem at the airport or border:

  • Device support: Verify the full model identifier and regional version, not only the marketing name. Some devices sold under the same model family may omit eSIM support in particular markets.
  • Carrier lock: A locked phone may refuse an eSIM from another operator. Ask the company that supplied the phone whether it is unlocked for another network.
  • Profile limits: MTS says the number of profiles a phone can store depends on the device. A phone may store several profiles but allow only a subset to be active at once. Confirm the behavior in your handset’s manual.
  • Existing line conversion: Replacing a physical SIM with eSIM may deactivate the physical card. Do not start conversion until you understand how your number and current service will behave.
  • QR code and recovery: Save the official installation message and any recovery instructions. MTS says the same profile cannot be active on two devices simultaneously; a move may require removal from one phone and installation on another under the operator’s process.
  • Power and connectivity: Charge the phone and have Wi-Fi or another data connection available during download. Avoid deleting a working profile unless MTS instructs you to do so.
  • Travel dates: Check when the selected service starts, when any included resources begin to be used, and what happens if activation is delayed. These conditions are product-specific.

The Kaspersky eSIM Store Serbia destination page and its “How to get eSIM online” section explain that users can select a destination, choose an available eSIM option, and follow the service’s installation and activation steps. Availability and terms depend on the option displayed when you check. (Kaspersky eSIM Store, Serbia destination page, checked 31 October 2026.)

For a data-focused trip, you can check the current eSIM options for Serbia in Kaspersky eSIM Store. This is a destination page for browsing what is currently available for Serbia; it is not an MTS plan page and does not imply that Kaspersky eSIM Store is affiliated with MTS. Review the conditions shown for an individual option before choosing it.

Coverage and mobile technologies in Serbia

MTS publishes a coverage map that lets users check service availability at specific locations in Serbia. Use it to inspect your accommodation, arrival point and planned route, especially if you will travel outside a major city or spend time indoors, on roads or in less populated areas. A map is a planning aid, not a promise of service in every room or at every moment. Buildings, terrain, congestion, maintenance and handset radio support can all affect the connection you experience. (MTS, “Network coverage” map, checked 31 October 2026.)

MTS has publicly announced 5G service in Serbia and says that its 5G signal covers major cities and roads, with coverage expanding over time. Its customer help information also explains that a phone may connect to the available network, commonly 4G, when 5G is not available at a location. These statements describe network availability in general, not a guarantee for an individual address, plan or phone. Actual access depends on the eSIM service, the device’s supported bands and 5G configuration, local conditions, and the operator’s current provisioning rules. (MTS, “mts launches 5G network in Serbia,” and MTS Customer Support, 5G network FAQ, checked 31 October 2026.)

For a traveller, the useful question is not simply whether an operator has 4G or 5G. Check whether the specific place and route are covered, whether your device supports the relevant network bands, and whether the service you choose is enabled for the technology you expect to use. If 5G is unavailable, a compatible device may fall back to another available network generation, but the exact behavior is controlled by the network and handset. Leave network selection on automatic unless MTS gives you a reason to change it.

Local MTS service versus a travel eSIM

A local service and a travel eSIM can both put a phone online in Serbia, but their account structure and intended use differ.

A local MTS eSIM is a digital SIM profile for an MTS service in Serbia. It may suit a visitor who needs a local mobile number or wants to use a local prepaid service. The visitor may need to visit a shop, register a prepaid line, satisfy identification checks or follow an online ordering process. Confirm the exact requirements with MTS. A local plan can include voice, messaging and data according to its terms, but no particular feature should be assumed without checking the active offer.

A travel eSIM is a separate digital profile selected for a trip. Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website that lets users choose, purchase and activate an eSIM with a plan for mobile internet during an international trip. The underlying mobile service is supplied through the relevant telecommunications arrangements; Kaspersky eSIM Store is not a Serbian mobile operator, does not own a mobile network and does not itself provide mobile internet coverage. A travel eSIM is often data-focused, so check the displayed terms for voice, SMS, hotspot use, supported destinations, activation timing and device requirements.

The convenience of installing a travel eSIM before arrival can be valuable when you want data soon after landing and do not want to arrange a local line first. A local MTS eSIM may be more suitable when a local number or local service relationship matters to you. Neither choice is automatically better for every itinerary. Compare what each current offer actually includes, how it activates, and whether it will work on your exact phone.

If you keep two lines, check the default settings before crossing the border. Set the preferred line for mobile data, decide which line should receive calls and texts, and review data roaming separately for each line. Some phones allow one eSIM and one physical SIM to operate together; some variants support eSIM-only service, and simultaneous use depends on both the handset and subscription. The MTS FAQ notes that eSIM profile limits and simultaneous profile use depend on the device. Your phone’s regional variant may differ from another version with a similar model name.

A practical choice for your Serbia trip

Start with the outcome you need. If you need a local number, ask MTS which visitor-eligible prepaid service supports eSIM and what registration steps you must complete. If you already use MTS, check whether your account can be converted and save the installation instructions before switching. If you mainly need data for maps, messaging and bookings, compare MTS’s current local options with a travel eSIM based on coverage for your itinerary, device compatibility and the conditions shown at purchase.

Before departure, verify the exact phone variant, unlock status, installation connection, profile recovery process and default SIM settings. On arrival, confirm that the intended line is selected for data and test it while you still have access to Wi-Fi. For local network availability, use MTS’s coverage map and current support information; for a travel option, check the destination page and the terms of the specific eSIM you select.

You can browse current Serbia travel eSIM options in Kaspersky eSIM Store. Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website for choosing, purchasing and activating travel eSIM plans; it is not an operator or network owner. MTS and its marks belong to their respective rights holder. Kaspersky eSIM Store is not affiliated with, endorsed by or an official partner of MTS. Product availability, activation steps, coverage and conditions can change, so confirm current details with the relevant provider before purchase.
