Sony Xperia 1 V eSIM: Compatibility and Setup

Sony Xperia 1 V eSIM: Compatibility, Setup, and Travel Use
The Sony Xperia 1 V can use an eSIM in one specifically documented version: XQ-DQ54. Sony’s Xperia 1 V Help Guide identifies eSIM configuration as available on XQ-DQ54 only. Other phones sold under the same Xperia 1 V name may have a different SIM configuration, so the commercial name alone is not enough to confirm compatibility. Check the model code on your own phone before choosing a travel plan.
Sony maps Xperia 1 V in Europe to XQ-DQ54 and Asia to XQ-DQ72; its setup guide lists XQ-DQ54 only for eSIM. Sony’s US support page says US Xperia models do not support eSIM, although that page dates from 2023. Imported phones may differ from locally sold versions.
Does the Sony Xperia 1 V support eSIM?
Yes, if your phone is model XQ-DQ54. Sony’s official Xperia 1 V Help Guide has a page titled “Configuring an eSIM (XQ-DQ54 only)” and describes downloading an eSIM from Settings. Sony’s UK SIM configuration table also marks Xperia 1 V XQ-DQ54 as eSIM-capable. These manufacturer sources establish support for that model code, not for every handset carrying the Xperia 1 V retail name.
| Check | What Sony documents |
|---|---|
| Commercial name | Sony Xperia 1 V |
| Confirmed eSIM model | XQ-DQ54 |
| Other listed model codes | XQ-DQ62 and XQ-DQ72 appear in the Help Guide, but eSIM setup is marked XQ-DQ54 only |
| Regional overview | Sony lists XQ-DQ54 for Europe and XQ-DQ72 for Asia |
| US-market note | Sony’s US support page says Xperia phones in the US do not support eSIM; confirm the exact current product with the seller |
| Carrier and plan | The phone must also be unlocked and accepted by the provider of the eSIM plan |
The distinction matters for imported or used devices and listings that show only the retail name. A compatible phone also needs to be unlocked and accepted by the plan provider; hardware support alone does not guarantee activation.
Sony’s current SIM configuration table (checked November 1, 2026) lists XQ-DQ54 as eSIM-capable and warns that non-EU models may differ. Its Xperia 1 V guide specifies XQ-DQ54 only. Do not infer support for XQ-DQ62 or XQ-DQ72 from the shared name. “Europe” and “Asia” refer to intended model markets, not the phone’s current location.
Check your exact model before you buy
Start with the model code rather than the name on the box or an online listing. On the phone, open Settings → About phone. Depending on the Android version, the model may be shown under “Model” or “Model name.” Sony’s device overview uses the same route and notes that the wording can vary. Record the full code, including the letters and numbers after the hyphen. If you are checking a device before purchase, ask the seller for a clear photo of the About phone screen or the original product label.
Next, look for evidence of an eSIM on the phone itself:
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Sony’s Xperia 1 V guide uses this path for the eSIM setup screen.
- Look for an Add SIM, Add eSIM, or similar option. Labels may vary slightly with software version or language.
- If an eSIM is already installed, check the SIM list and its status. A listed profile indicates that the phone can see that profile; it does not by itself prove the device is unlocked or that the profile will work at your destination.
- If available, look in Settings → About phone → SIM status for an EID. The EID is an identifier used by eSIM-capable devices. Menu placement differs by Android release and carrier software.
An EID or add-eSIM control is a useful signal, but check it alongside the model code. A missing menu can reflect a regional configuration or carrier software; do not assume an update will add support. Ask the seller or carrier to confirm an imported device.
Use this quick checklist before selecting a plan:
- [ ] The phone’s About phone screen shows XQ-DQ54, or Sony documentation for your exact code confirms eSIM support.
- [ ] Settings includes a way to add or download an eSIM profile.
- [ ] The device is not SIM-locked to a carrier that prevents use of another plan.
- [ ] Your Android version and network settings are up to date enough to follow the current setup flow.
- [ ] The eSIM plan supports the country or region on your itinerary and the network bands/service conditions there.
- [ ] You have reliable Wi-Fi or another internet connection available during installation.
- [ ] You have read when the plan begins, how long it remains valid, and whether it is data-only.
Review the exact model code before choosing a plan, especially if the handset was imported or refurbished.
What the regional and carrier differences mean
“European” and “Asian” refer to model variants, not the phone’s current location. Sony identifies XQ-DQ54 with Europe and XQ-DQ72 with Asia; the eSIM guide applies to XQ-DQ54. Retail listings may omit this code.
The phone’s eSIM hardware and the mobile operator’s service are separate checks. A device can be locked or unable to use a provider’s activation method. Check each point separately:
- Hardware and model: Does the exact XQ-DQ code support eSIM?
- Carrier lock: Can the phone accept a profile from another provider?
- Plan availability: Is the selected plan valid in every country on your route?
- Activation method: Does the provider use a QR code, in-app installation, or another supported method?
- Local network service: Does the plan’s network partner offer service at the places and times you need it?
Sony’s US support page says Xperia phone models in the US do not support eSIM. The page dates from 2023, so verify an imported phone’s code and Settings. For a carrier-sold device, also confirm that it is unlocked.
“Dual SIM” can mean one nano-SIM plus an eSIM or two physical SIMs, depending on the variant. Sony lists nano-SIM/eSIM for its UK XQ-DQ54 product; check the exact code instead of inferring support from the tray.
For a guided compatibility check, check your device. Use the model code and on-device eSIM controls together, particularly for an imported phone.
Install an eSIM on the Xperia 1 V
Install after confirming compatibility and unlock status. Connect to the internet and keep the provider’s activation details available. A QR code may need to be displayed on another screen. Do not delete a working profile or reuse a code unless the provider says it can be reinstalled.
Sony’s Xperia 1 V guide gives these model-specific steps for XQ-DQ54:
- Connect to Wi-Fi. A stable connection helps the phone download the profile. Keep the device powered on while the download completes.
- Open the SIM settings. Tap Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
- Choose the add option. If a physical SIM is inserted or an eSIM is already downloaded, tap the add icon.
- Scan the provider’s QR code. Follow the on-screen instructions. If your provider offers in-app installation, use its stated flow instead.
- Download the eSIM. Confirm the requested installation and wait for the profile to finish downloading.
- Enable the profile. When download is complete, open its settings and turn on Use SIM.
- Name the profile. Give it a label such as “Travel data” so you can distinguish it from your regular number.
- Choose the data SIM. In SIM settings, select the travel eSIM for mobile data when you are ready to use it.
- Set roaming only if required. Some travel eSIM plans require data roaming for their profile. Follow the plan’s instructions and make sure roaming is enabled for the intended eSIM, not accidentally for your home SIM.
Android menu names can differ across versions, and Sony notes that the procedure can depend on the network operator. If the screen does not match these steps, consult the provider’s setup directions and the current Android instructions for your device. The Android installation guide describes the general QR-code flow; its menu labels may be written for another Android manufacturer. The iOS installation guide is for Apple devices and is not the setup path for this Xperia, but it can help explain the separate iPhone flow if you are preparing a second device.
If installing before travel, leave the eSIM off or unselected for data until needed, if the plan allows. Check when validity starts: conditions vary by plan. Do not delete a profile simply to stop using it; its activation code may not work again.
Use it for mobile data while travelling
Before departure, check the destination, the covered countries on a multi-country route, the data allowance, validity period, renewal or top-up options, and the moment the validity starts. Also check whether the plan includes only mobile data. A data-only eSIM generally does not provide a regular phone number or ordinary voice calls and SMS unless its terms say otherwise. You can keep your usual SIM for calls and texts if your device and carrier allow it, but understand the home carrier’s roaming charges.
Once you are ready to use the travel profile:
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs and select the travel eSIM.
- Turn on Use SIM if it is off.
- Set the travel eSIM as the SIM for mobile data.
- Leave your home line selected for calls or messages if you want to keep using it and understand its roaming terms.
- Turn off mobile data switching between SIMs if your settings offer that control and you want to avoid the phone switching data to your home line.
- Enable data roaming for the travel eSIM only if the plan’s instructions require it.
- Wait for the phone to register with a supported local network. The first connection may take several minutes.
When crossing a border, confirm that the plan covers the country and that the travel profile is still selected for data. Regional coverage and network availability depend on plan conditions. Follow the provider’s instructions if manual network selection is needed.
Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website where travellers can choose, arrange, and activate an eSIM with a data plan for an international trip. It is not a mobile operator or the network that provides radio coverage. The plan’s service depends on its stated terms and the local networks it uses. To browse current destinations and compare plan details for your route, visit the Kaspersky eSIM Store. Check that each country, data amount, validity period, and activation timing fits your trip before you choose.
Estimate data use for maps, tickets, transport, and messaging. Check any hotspot limits and keep essential travel details available offline.
Troubleshooting common eSIM problems
There is no “Add eSIM” option
Check Settings → About phone for the full code. Sony documents eSIM setup for XQ-DQ54 only. For another code, ask Sony or the seller to confirm the variant; a software update cannot add eSIM support to an unsupported model.
The QR code will not scan
Make sure the QR code is fully visible and in focus; increase the display brightness or show it on a second device. Check that it belongs to the intended plan and has not already been used. Use manual or in-app installation only if the provider supports it. Keep activation codes private.
The profile downloads but does not connect
Enable Use SIM and select the travel profile for data. Check roaming requirements and destination eligibility. Toggle airplane mode, restart, and wait for network registration. Enter APN details only when provided by the plan provider.
Mobile data is using the wrong SIM
Explicitly select the travel eSIM for mobile data and disable automatic switching if you do not want the home line to handle data. Selecting the eSIM for data does not disable roaming on the physical SIM.
The phone shows signal but apps cannot load
Check that mobile data is on, the destination is included, and the plan has data remaining. Review APN and roaming instructions. Try another location; if the issue continues, note the model code, destination, and error before contacting support.
It worked at home but not abroad
The profile may install at home even if the plan works only in its listed destination. Check its activation timing, country coverage, selected data SIM, and roaming settings. An installed profile is not necessarily usable everywhere.
The phone is carrier-locked
Ask the carrier that sold the phone whether it is unlocked and accepts another provider’s eSIM. Installing a profile does not remove a carrier lock. If it remains locked, use a permitted alternative such as the carrier’s roaming service or another compatible device.
Frequently asked questions
Does every Sony Xperia 1 V support eSIM?
No. Sony documents eSIM setup for XQ-DQ54 only. Confirm the code in Settings; other variants may have different SIM configurations.
Is the Asian XQ-DQ72 model eSIM-compatible?
Sony identifies XQ-DQ72 as the Asia model and specifies XQ-DQ54 only in its eSIM setup guide. Do not assume XQ-DQ72 supports eSIM; confirm the exact version before buying.
Can I use the US version of the Xperia 1 V?
Sony’s US support page says US Xperia phones do not support eSIM. Because that page is older, check the exact code and current seller information for imported or refurbished phones. Confirm carrier lock status as well.
Where can I find the EID?
Look under Settings → About phone → SIM status; menu placement varies. You can also check Settings → Network & internet → SIMs for Add eSIM. Verify the model code too.
Does eSIM mean I can use two numbers at once?
Not necessarily. SIM configuration depends on the variant, and travel data plans may not include a phone number. Check the selected plan’s calling, SMS, and dual-SIM conditions.
Will I need to turn on data roaming?
Sometimes. Follow the plan’s instructions and apply roaming to the travel eSIM. Check home-carrier charges before leaving the physical SIM active for data.
Can I delete and reinstall the eSIM if something goes wrong?
Only delete it if the provider confirms it can be installed again. First check the network, data SIM, roaming, and APN, then contact support.
Can I use the eSIM for calls and SMS?
Only if the plan explicitly includes them. Many travel eSIMs are data-only; internet calls and messages may work through apps.
Before you choose a travel eSIM
Confirm the model code, on-device eSIM controls, and unlock status. Then review the plan’s destinations, data allowance, validity, activation timing, roaming instructions, and service limits. Sony’s guidance identifies XQ-DQ54 as the Xperia 1 V version for eSIM; check other regional and carrier-market versions individually.
After compatibility is clear, choose a plan that matches the length and route of your trip. Kaspersky eSIM Store helps you use its app or website to select, arrange, and activate an eSIM with a mobile-data plan for international travel. Read the current plan conditions carefully; destination access and network service depend on that plan and local network availability. If the exact model remains uncertain, ask the device seller or Sony support to verify it before purchasing, and keep your home SIM’s roaming settings under control while you travel.
