Vietnamobile eSIM in Vietnam: what to check

Vietnamobile eSIM in Vietnam: activation, coverage and travel checks
If you are travelling to Vietnam and searching for a Vietnamobile eSIM, distinguish confirmed eSIM support from eligibility to obtain a new local line as a visitor. Vietnamobile publishes an eSIM activation guide, so its support for eSIM is confirmed. The guide describes identity verification and QR-code activation, but does not establish that every visitor can buy a new eSIM remotely, that a tourist-specific offer is available, or that a physical SIM can always be converted in the same way.
Information was checked on 4 November 2026. Procedures, eligibility and service availability can change, so confirm your case with Vietnamobile before relying on it.
Vietnamobile’s role in Vietnam
Vietnamobile is a mobile network operator in Vietnam. In its English “About Us” page, the company says it was established in 2009 and describes services and infrastructure that include mobile telecommunications and 4G. The Ministry of Science and Technology’s notice about the renewed network-service licence, published on 3 July 2025, says Vietnamobile is authorized to operate a public terrestrial mobile network nationwide. The notice lists GSM (2G), IMT-2000 (3G) and IMT-Advanced (4G) technologies under that licence.
A licence’s geographic scope is not a promise that signal is available at every address, island, road or indoors. Terrain, buildings, distance from a serving site, network load and maintenance affect service. Treat “nationwide” in a licence as the permitted operating scope, not uniform coverage. If you will leave major population centres, ask the operator about the locations on your itinerary and the current technology there.
There is a recent change to consider when reading older coverage information. On 11 September 2026, Vietnamobile published a notice saying it had stopped 2G service from 15 September 2026 and that devices supporting only 2G would no longer continue to use its mobile services. For travellers, a 2G-only phone is not suitable according to that notice. Confirm which current network technology the operator supports for your handset and destination.
Vietnamobile’s public coverage tool is a starting point for checking a place, but its page labels displayed coverage as GSM/WCDMA. That label does not clearly describe the post-shutdown 4G footprint. Use the map as one reference and ask Vietnamobile for a current 4G check for the exact city, island, rural district or route you plan to visit.
Is Vietnamobile eSIM available?
Yes. Vietnamobile’s official support article “Hướng dẫn kích hoạt ESIM Vietnamobile,” dated 11 February 2026, documents eSIM activation. Its English mobile-subscription page also lists eSIM. These pages confirm support for the technology, but not every sales or visitor-eligibility detail.
The activation guide assumes a subscriber has a mobile number and order code. It directs users to open the Vietnamobile app, select SIM activation and eSIM, submit an identity document and portrait, confirm an OTP, complete a video call, then receive a result and QR code by email. It does not confirm that a traveller can complete the purchase from abroad or that every foreign passport and phone model will be accepted.
In other words, eSIM support does not automatically mean an online tourist product, instant self-service registration or a visitor-ready prepaid eSIM without further checks. Ask Vietnamobile whether visitors can open a new line, how to buy the required SIM transaction, whether a passport is accepted for the complete process, and whether registration requires an in-person step. Also clarify whether eSIM is a new line or a replacement for a physical SIM, how an OTP and video call work abroad, and which 4G coverage and bands apply to your exact device.
The guide lists a passport as one possible identity document and asks for a valid, legible image. This confirms a passport can be submitted in the described flow; it does not guarantee that every foreign visitor is eligible, that a passport alone is sufficient, or that an application will be approved. Confirm current registration, prepaid eligibility and purchase channels before relying on this route.
How Vietnamobile eSIM activation works
The official guide gives a practical outline, though options can differ for a new line and a SIM replacement. Follow the current app instructions.
Prepare first
Have an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone, stable internet, email access, the requested valid identity document and the SIM order details. Keep your existing SIM active until Vietnamobile confirms whether it will be replaced. If applying from abroad, check that you can receive the OTP and complete video verification.
Follow the operator’s steps
- Open the Vietnamobile app using the official app route shown by the operator.
- Choose SIM activation, then eSIM. Enter the subscriber number and order code requested.
- Submit identity details. Provide a clear document image and portrait if requested; a passport is listed in the guide.
- Confirm the request with the OTP and complete the confirmation steps.
- Complete video verification if prompted. The article gives a daily service window of 07:00–21:00; check the current local hours in the app.
- Wait for the result and QR code sent by email, then add the profile through the phone’s mobile-network settings.
- Select the eSIM for data when you are ready to use it. Keep your usual SIM settings if you need that number for calls or messages.
If the app requests an order code you do not have, ask how to obtain the relevant SIM transaction. If the request is pending or declined, contact support rather than repeatedly scanning a QR code or deleting a profile. Ask whether it was issued, whether an old SIM remains active and whether another code is needed.
Check your phone before travelling
A phone may support eSIM in one market or hardware configuration and lack it in another. Check the exact model identifier and sales region, not just the marketing name. Confirm that the handset can add an eSIM, is carrier-unlocked and supports the network technology and bands Vietnamobile uses where you will travel.
After the 2G shutdown, a 2G-only phone is unsuitable; confirm that your handset supports a network Vietnamobile currently offers at your destination. LTE support is a useful check, but the operator must also have service at the location. The 2025 licence notice confirms 4G as an authorized technology; the operator’s September 2026 notice confirms 2G ended. Neither proves that every model variant supports the relevant bands or that every place has 4G. Ask the operator or manufacturer if you cannot verify your model.
Before departure, update the operating system, make sure you have Wi-Fi for setup and keep the activation email and support details available. Check how many eSIM profiles your phone stores and which lines it can activate at once. On iPhone and Android, menu labels vary: use mobile or cellular settings, choose add eSIM and follow the scan or install prompts. If QR scanning fails, ask about an official manual method instead of guessing. You can also review eSIM compatibility.
Coverage and service expectations
Vietnamobile service depends on its network at your location. The Ministry of Science and Technology’s July 2025 licence notice identifies nationwide scope and 3G/4G technologies. The operator’s coverage page offers a location lookup, while its September 2026 notice confirms the 2G shutdown. These sources answer different questions: a licence, a map and a technology notice are not interchangeable evidence.
Check each part of your itinerary, not just the arrival airport or hotel. City streets, underground stations, mountain roads, islands and building interiors can have different radio conditions. Ask about the exact places and routes, and keep an offline map or another way to retrieve essential details. The official lookup page visibly refers to GSM/WCDMA zones, so do not treat it as a definitive current LTE map without confirmation. Recheck before travel if your plans include remote places. An eSIM profile does not create a signal, improve reception or guarantee speed.
Local Vietnamobile service or a travel eSIM?
A Vietnamobile eSIM may suit you if you need a line issued by that operator, want to use its subscriber process, and have confirmed it accepts your customer type and documents. A local line may matter if you need an operator-issued number or its voice and messaging service, but verify what the service you obtain actually includes. This article does not list or compare plans, prices, data allowances or validity periods; ask Vietnamobile for current conditions.
A travel eSIM can be useful when your priority is mobile data for a trip and you prefer to arrange the profile separately from a local subscriber line. Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website that helps travellers choose, purchase and activate an eSIM with a travel data plan. Its Vietnam destination page describes data connectivity and identifies the local telecommunications providers used for its Vietnam service. It is a separate travel product, not a Vietnamobile subscription; it does not provide a Vietnamobile number and should not be treated as a replacement for local calls or SMS.
Before choosing, define what you need: a local number, SMS verification, voice calls, mobile data, or an additional connection for maps and messaging apps. Check whether an eSIM can be installed before departure, when activation begins, whether that profile needs data roaming enabled, and whether your home line can remain active. Confirm device compatibility and the network setup for the selected service.
If you want to prepare a separate data connection, see the eSIM options for Vietnam. Review details at the time of purchase because destinations, partner networks and service conditions can change. Kaspersky eSIM Store helps with selection and activation; it is not a mobile network operator, does not own the local network and does not itself provide the radio signal or mobile internet service.
Keep your home number available
Some travellers want data in Vietnam while receiving calls or verification messages on their regular number. If your phone supports dual SIM use, you may be able to keep the home SIM available and choose another profile for data. Simultaneous line behaviour depends on the exact model and software. Check this before relying on SMS codes for banking or work. Ask your home provider about roaming settings and charges: a travel data eSIM does not automatically prevent the home line from roaming. For Vietnamobile eSIM, confirm whether activation replaces your physical SIM or creates a separate line, and keep the old SIM available until the operator confirms the new profile works.
Troubleshooting after installation
If a QR code will not scan, make sure it is not cropped or obscured and use a second screen if possible. If it still fails, ask Vietnamobile whether the code is valid and whether the profile has already been downloaded; do not assume rescanning creates a fresh profile.
If the eSIM installs but does not connect, confirm that the profile is switched on and selected for mobile data, mobile data is enabled and airplane mode is off. Follow Vietnamobile’s current instructions for APN or network settings rather than copying them from another provider. If service does not start, ask support to verify registration, profile status and coverage at your location. For a separate travel eSIM, follow that provider’s instructions. Avoid deleting a profile unless its provider confirms it can be reinstalled.
Frequently asked questions
Does Vietnamobile support eSIM?
Yes. Its 11 February 2026 support article describes eSIM activation, and its English mobile-subscription page lists eSIM. This confirms the technology, not eligibility for every visitor.
Can a tourist get a Vietnamobile eSIM online?
The guide lists a passport among possible identity documents but also requires a subscriber number and order code. It does not promise a complete remote tourist purchase. Ask whether a visitor can open a new line and what registration steps apply.
Does Vietnamobile eSIM work on every phone?
No. Check the exact model variant, eSIM support, carrier lock and 4G LTE capability.
Is 2G still available on Vietnamobile?
Vietnamobile announced it stopped 2G service from 15 September 2026. Do not rely on a 2G-only phone; confirm current network compatibility and coverage.
Is Kaspersky eSIM Store the Vietnamobile network?
No. Kaspersky eSIM Store is an app and website for choosing, purchasing and activating an eSIM with a travel data plan. It is not Vietnamobile, does not own a mobile network and does not itself provide mobile connectivity.
A practical decision checklist
Before choosing, confirm whether you need a local number or only data; whether Vietnamobile accepts visitors and your documents; and whether you have the order reference, app, email and OTP access required for activation. Check that your exact phone variant is unlocked, eSIM-capable and supports 4G LTE. Verify coverage for your destinations, choose the correct data line and ask your home provider about roaming. Keep an offline way to access directions if service is temporarily unavailable.
Vietnamobile eSIM support is confirmed, but its public instructions leave visitor-specific questions open. Ask about eligibility, purchase, registration and current coverage before departure. For a separate mobile-data connection, Kaspersky eSIM Store offers a distinct way to review travel eSIM options for Vietnam. It is not affiliated with Vietnamobile; Vietnamobile and its marks belong to their respective owners.
